WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT FIRE ESCAPE
What should we do when a fire occurs?
How do we escape?
I. DO NOT hide yourself in the bathroom when a fire occurs.
Due to the fact that bathroom doors mostly are plastic, which is weak in heat resistance, high temperature of thick smoke tends to melt the doors. Hence, hiding in the bathroom is highly likely to get yourself killed for thick smoke.
II. The BEST fire escape plan is to “get out of the building”. Ideally, run down to the first floor. Then, leave the building.
1. WHAT IF FIRE OCCURS DOWNSTAIRS?
If you cannot judge if the fire occurs upstairs or downstairs, “downward “ is a better suggestion as long as staircases don’t fill with thick smoke and high heat, along with clear pathways.
(Why is “upwards” not suggested? That’s because thick smoke arises rapidly and no one can run faster than “smoke”. Moreover, the more upwards you are, the thicker the smoke is and the higher the temperature is.)
2. PRECAUTIONS
◆ When pathways are clear, “downward” escape is more correct. Remember to immediately shut the door after you open the door and make the runaway to avoid the fire seriously breaks out.
◆ When safety pathways fill with thick smoke, DO NOT try to escape through it. It’s very dangerous no matter if it goes downwards or upwards. In this situation, Staying in safe rooms and closing the door to seek help is suggested instead.
3. EXCEPTIONS
If a fire occurs in the basement, run up to the first floor as soon as possible. Then, get yourself out of the building.
